Mastering Crochet Short Rows: Shaping & Seamless Ribbing
Unlock the magic of crochet short rows! In this two-part virtual workshop, you will learn how to create incredible shapes, wedges, and textures without breaking your yarn.
Whether you are aiming for perfectly fitted garments, seamless embedded ribbing, or intricate textures, mastering short rows will elevate your crochet skills. By the end of this course, you will be reading short row charts like a pro and confidently choosing the perfect join for any project.
Course Schedule & Curriculum
Both sessions include live, hands-on instruction and Q&A time. Please expect to complete some light crochet "homework" (repeating the beanie sections) after our second session to finish your project!
Part 1: Short Row Foundations (1.5 to 2 hours) - 14th of November 10 AM BST
Dive into the theory and "lingo" of short rows (understanding pairs, joints, and how to read patterns/charts). We will crochet together to explore basic short rows using half double crochet, and then experiment with shorter stitches like single crochet to see why different join methods are necessary. We will also explore joins for back-loop-only, front-loop-only, alternate rows, and anchor stitches for the tidiest possible finish.
Key Learnings: Lingo/charts, picking the best join method, and using anchor stitches anchor stitches for gap-free short rows and ribbing
Part 2: Beanie Crochet-A-Long (1.5 hours) 28th of November 10 AM BST:
Put your new skills into practice with a Beanie Crochet-A-Long (CAL)! We will cover the theory of embedding ribbing and review a specific short row shaping chart for the beanie pattern. Together, we will aim to finish one complete segment of the beanie on camera. You will then have the skills and confidence to repeat this segment (for a total of 4 to 5 sections) to complete your hat.
Key Learnings: Embedded ribbing and gaining total confidence in following a short row shaping chart.

Meet Your Instructor: Lolla
Hey, I’m Lolla (@o_layarn on instagram)! I’m a crochet designer and I write clothing patterns for every day outfits!
I live in England (but I’m italian!) and I’m very outdoorsy… but I also have an office job. So when I crochet clothes, I think about wearability, breathability, and especially how do they blend in my everyday life!
This is why more and more I prefer opaque fabric, but keeping in drape-y and breathable. Also, I more and more focus on the right shaping!
I like seeing my designs as a blank canvas for people to perfectly adapt them to their personality… In order to do so, I tend to design gender neutral or gender inclusive garments, including different neckline, or different length at the bust, or different sleeve styles… so that you can adapt the pattern to your own wardrobe!
